The Cryptocode was intented by Joseph Grassi, who filed a patent on June 1st, 1922 in the UK, then in several other countries in the following years.
The device was sold by the Cryptocode Machine Syndicate, based in London.
Not much is known about its commercial success, or its inventor’s life.
Two devices are known to still exist:
- One is at NSA’s National Cryptographic Museum.
- The other is in private hands, it was sold on May 2006 for £2,400.
