Classical Cipher Contraptions

Confederate Cipher Disc

Replica Project

Presentation

Replicas of this device can be readily purchased online, but they are not as faithful as advertised and only consist of 2 thin discs with a rivet for an axle. Other devices, made of wood, include a third disc but are not accurate in size and look.

The goal of this project is to make a more historically accurate reproduction of the device.

The difficulty lies not in the complexity of the device, but in their rarity which makes the search for precise information an arduous task.

Once all the necessary information is gathered, the parts are modeled.

The device will first be 3D-printed, and a later version may be made of brass for better historical accuracy.

3D printing

A first protoype is 3D-printed with regular yellow PLA and painted.

The design is refined, then another version is printed with metal-filled filament, sanded, and assembled.

It is shown here next to the genuine device.
